Are CBD Products Safe For Pets

CBD has a host of different benefits for the human body and is widely used for overall health and wellbeing. It’s great for ingesting, inhaling and even consuming, with popular CBD edibles like CBD chocolate and CBD gummies rising in popularity. But with all the focus on the benefits of CBD for humans, what about our pets? In this article, we’ll look at what CBD is, what the benefits are, and we will answer your burning questions such as ‘can pets use CBD oil?’ and ‘can pets overdose on CBD oil?’. Read on to find out everything you need to know about your pets and CBD.

What is CBD?

CBD oil comes from the cannabis plant which is made up of many different compounds, with the most famous compounds being CBD and THC. These compounds are found naturally in the resin of the cannabis plant and are used for different reasons.

THC is the psychoactive component found in cannabis and is responsible for the ‘high’ feeling you get after smoking weed. Meanwhile, CBD is the non-psychoactive component thought to be responsible for many of the medical benefits that are associated with cannabis, and is continuously growing in popularity with people around the world. CBD has therefore been used medically and risen in popularity over the past few years as more and more people start to realise the potential of taking CBD regularly. Some of the benefits that people have experienced include:

  • Reduced PTSD symptoms
  • Pain relief
  • Offset anxiety and depression
  • Alleviated symptoms of ALS
  • Prevent arthritis symptoms
  • Improved sleep
  • Treating epilepsy and other seizure conditions

Although there are many incredible benefits for humans, it makes you wonder: can pets use CBD oil?

Can Pets Take CBD?

Research on CBD is still in its early stages, but some studies and other evidence have found that it may help treat certain conditions in pets such as anxiety, pain, cancer and arthritis. CBD is becoming a popular, all-natural way to treat your pets that won’t rack up the vets bills.

Can Pets Overdose On CBD Oil?

Medically speaking, your dog or cat can’t overdose on CBD. However, whilst they cannot overdose, too much CBD may result in adverse effects such as pet poisoning or toxicity. When giving your dog or cat CBD, make sure to give them the correct dosage identified by your veterinarian.

Research Of CBD For Dogs

Research that has been carried out on humans shows that it may be effective for treating epilepsy, anxiety, irritable bowel disease, chronic pain, sleep disorders and more. However, only a few reliable studies have been done to see the effects of CBD in dogs. A study from 2019 was researching safety, anti-inflammatory properties and anti-pain properties in dogs with osteoarthritis. The subjects were given 2 or 8 milligrams of CBD oil per kilogram of body weight. The results showed that eighty percent of the dogs showed some improvement in their pain and mobility

In 2019, a small study showed that epileptic dogs that were given CBD in addition to seizure medication had significantly fewer seizures than those that received seizure medication and a placebo. However, a similar number of dogs in the CBD group and the placebo group responded to treatment and had decreases in seizure activity.

Ways To Give Dogs CBD

CBD for pets comes in many forms such as treats, oils and creams. However, the effectiveness of each method is scarce. A study on dogs with epilepsy in 2018 found that CBD oil given orally was much more effective than a cream or gel capsule. However, more research is required.

Due to the research carried out previously referenced, the most effective dose of CBD for dogs with osteoarthritis was 2 mg per kg of weight. However, this study may be biased and this shouldn’t be considered a dosing recommendation – you should always first speak with your veterinarian. Every dog will respond differently to CBD, so it’s important to start small with your dosage and monitor your dog’s results. You can adjust the dosage from here depending on how they react.

How Does CBD Affect Dogs?

If you decide to give your dog CBD, you should keep a close eye out for positive or negative reactions. For example, if you have given CBD to your anxious dog before a firework show and they seem calm, the CBD has most likely been effective. If your dog’s arthritis isn’t causing as many mobility issues as usual, the CBD may be doing its thing.

For negative effects, look out for excess panting, lethargy, vomiting, drooling, loss of balance or anything else out of the ordinary as there’s a chance they may have consumed too much CBD. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, speak to your veterinarian immediately.

Research Of CBD For Cats

Although there is no hard evidence that CBD has a positive impact on cats, some vets say that CBD oil is generally safe for cats. However, there can be some adverse effects to giving your cat CBD oil including gastrointestinal upset and some sedation. If this occurs, simply discontinue the use of the oil.

Many use CBD to increase their cat’s quality of life or to relieve ailments, many vets agree that CBD shouldn’t trigger any side effects, however, we always recommend speaking with your vet first.
